Google Transforms Gemini into an AI Shopping Haven with Walmart and More

Google is revolutionizing online shopping by evolving its Gemini chatbot into a comprehensive shopping assistant — now even functioning as a checkout area.

On Sunday, the tech giant unveiled collaborations with Walmart, Shopify, Wayfair, and other leading retailers to enhance Gemini’s shopping features. This initiative will enable users to search for products, receive tailored recommendations, and, in many cases, finalize purchases directly within the chat interface.

This announcement coincided with the launch of the National Retail Federation’s annual convention in New York, which gathers nearly 40,000 leaders from retail and tech sectors. This year, discussions are primarily focused on the growing impact of artificial intelligence on e-commerce.

Seamless Shopping Experience

A major feature introduced is instant checkout. Customers can buy items directly via the Gemini app using payment methods associated with their Google accounts.

Walmart confirmed that users linking their Walmart and Google accounts will enjoy personalized suggestions based on their shopping history. Products purchased through Gemini can be directly added to their existing online carts at Walmart or Sam’s Club.

For instance, if a user asks Gemini about essentials for a winter ski trip, the chatbot will provide suggestions from partner retailers’ inventories. Users can compare, choose, and purchase items all within the same conversation.

A Pivotal Change in Retail

John Furner, Walmart’s incoming president and CEO, described this as a significant turning point for e-commerce.

He stated, “The transition from conventional web or app search to agent-led commerce marks the next evolution in retail,” in a joint statement with Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

The concept is straightforward: rather than entering keywords in a search box and navigating various websites, shoppers can converse, clarify their needs, and complete purchases in one environment.

The Race in Technology

Google faces competition in this initiative. Companies like OpenAI and Amazon are also advancing AI-driven shopping solutions.

In October, OpenAI and Walmart unveiled a similar collaboration enabling ChatGPT users to shop from Walmart’s catalog with instant checkout, excluding fresh groceries. Prior to the recent holiday season, OpenAI introduced its in-chat purchase feature with select retailers and Etsy vendors.

According to Salesforce, AI accounted for approximately $272 billion or 20% of global retail sales during the last holiday shopping season, demonstrating how rapidly this technology is transforming consumer behavior.

Payment Options and Future Availability

Initially, Gemini’s shopping and checkout functions will be accessible only in the U.S., allowing customers to pay using cards linked to their Google accounts, with PayPal support expected soon. Google intends to extend service availability to more countries in the coming months.

Preserving Human Control

Shopify founder and CEO Tobi Lütke emphasized that while many consumers appreciate the idea of a technology-driven “personal shopper,” the company aims to avoid excessive automation.

“The shopper remains in control and makes the final decision,” he stated, emphasizing that the aim is to assist customers in finding suitable products without compromising their autonomy.

PayPal's Mike Edmonds cautioned retailers against adopting a wait-and-see approach, even though this transformation won’t occur overnight.

Walmart’s Ambitious Plans

During the same event, Walmart and Google unveiled plans for an expanded drone delivery service. In conjunction with Alphabet’s Wing, Walmart aims to add drone delivery functionalities to 150 more stores, increasing the total to 270 locations by 2027, with coverage ranging from Los Angeles to Miami.

Walmart’s Furner simply articulated the organization's goal: to “bridge the gap between 'I want it' and 'I have it'” by leveraging technology.
