Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai appeared in the city’s High Court on Monday for a mitigation hearing, the final stage before his sentencing in a high-profile national security trial. The 78-year-old pro-democracy activist could face life imprisonment following his conviction last month.
Lai, founder of the now-closed Apple Daily, was found guilty of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious material under the China-imposed national security law. He has denied all charges.
The trial has drawn global attention, with criticism from the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States. Hong Kong authorities, however, maintain that the trial was fair and argue that the national security law has helped restore stability in the city.
During the hearing, Lai’s lawyers asked for a lighter sentence. Under national security law guidelines, the sentence could range from 10 years to life. Lai sat in the court’s glass dock with eight other defendants, separated from the public by prison guards.
Prosecutors addressed concerns about Lai’s health, citing a medical report from January 9 confirming that his condition is “stable.” Several prosecution witnesses, including Andy Li and Wayland Chan Tsz-wah, provided key testimony against him.
Lai has long been a critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and a champion of press freedom in Hong Kong. Judges said he used Apple Daily to campaign against the CCP, even if it risked the public interest in China and Hong Kong.
The hearing drew strong public attention. Nearly 100 supporters lined up outside the court, some camping for days. Many voiced support for Lai, saying he had done nothing wrong.
The case has also attracted international attention. U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to release Lai, calling him a “positive activist,” but received no response.
The mitigation hearing will determine Lai’s final sentence and could influence media freedom, civil rights, and the future of pro-democracy activism in Hong Kong.
