Virat Kohli Breaks 28,000 Runs Barrier, Reflects on His Journey

Post by : Mina Rahman

On Sunday, Indian cricket sensation Virat Kohli marked a historic achievement, becoming the quickest player to amass 28,000 runs across all international formats. This remarkable milestone occurred during the first ODI against New Zealand, positioning him second on the all-time run-scorers chart, just behind Sachin Tendulkar.

Kohli accomplished this feat in his 624th innings, with a boundary off New Zealand’s leg-spinner Adithya Ashok. In comparison, Tendulkar reached this landmark in 644 innings, and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara did so in 666 innings.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Kohli expressed that it felt like “a dream come true.” He conveyed deep gratitude for the ability to bring happiness to fans through the sport. “I feel truly blessed and grateful for the journey and for the chance to make fans happy,” he remarked.

Recognized as the player of the match for the 45th time, Kohli scored 93 runs off 91 balls, playing an instrumental role in India’s triumph. He noted that his focus remained on the match rather than personal achievements, stating, “I trusted myself to put the opposition under pressure while playing within my strengths.”

Talking about his role at the number three spot, Kohli mentioned the necessity of counter-attacking when required while also adhering to discipline. This approach has enabled him to forge critical partnerships and positively influence match results.

Kohli shared a heartfelt gesture about sending his trophies to his mother in Gurgaon, who treasures them. Addressing the crowd’s enthusiasm as he batted post Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, he acknowledged their excitement while empathizing with the exiting players.

India’s captain, Shubman Gill, commended Kohli’s form, stating, “These pitches are challenging, yet he makes it seem effortless. I hope he continues to accumulate runs.” Kohli underlined that remaining focused on the present moment is vital for any athlete.
