Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe was found guilty of bribery and witness tampering in a historic trial that has profoundly shaken Colombia’s political landscape. This verdict marks the first time a former Colombian president has been criminally convicted, threatening the legacy of one of the country’s most influential and polarizing leaders.

Background and Charges

The legal case against Uribe centers on accusations that, during his presidency and afterward, he conspired to influence witnesses who had testified about his alleged links to right-wing paramilitary groups active in Colombia during the 1990s. These paramilitary forces were involved in violent clashes amid Colombia’s decades-long internal conflict. The witnesses at the heart of the trial were three former paramilitary members who had provided testimony to Senator Iván Cepeda, a left-wing politician who had investigated Uribe’s supposed connections.

The case began in 2012 when Uribe filed a defamation lawsuit against Cepeda. However, the Supreme Court dismissed the complaint and opened an investigation into Uribe himself starting in 2018, focusing on claims that Uribe and his legal team attempted to bribe and intimidate these former paramilitary witnesses to retract or alter their statements.

The Trial and Verdict

After a nearly six-month trial featuring intense scrutiny of evidence and testimonies, Bogotá’s 44th Criminal Court judge Sandra Heredia delivered a verdict that found Uribe guilty of bribery and procedural fraud. The judge concluded that Uribe had orchestrated efforts, through a lawyer, to persuade the imprisoned ex-paramilitary members to change their witness accounts to discredit Senator Cepeda’s investigation. The judge emphasized that the ruling was an act of justice, not a political victory, and the verdict lasted more than ten hours.

Uribe, who governed Colombia from 2002 to 2010, was not in court for the verdict but followed the proceedings from his home near Medellín. He denied all wrongdoing and declared his intent to appeal the decision. Sentencing is pending and could see him face up to 12 years in prison.

Political Reactions and National Impact

Uribe’s conviction has deepened the political divide in Colombia. He remains a fiercely debated figure: many credit him with restoring security and weakening guerrilla groups during his presidency, while critics blame his administration for human rights abuses and alleged ties to paramilitary violence. Outside the courthouse where the verdict was announced, supporters and opponents clashed, symbolizing the country’s polarized views.

The current Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, who came from a former guerrilla background, praised the ruling as a sign of a strong and independent judiciary. In contrast, some U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, condemned the verdict, asserting that Colombia’s judicial system was being politicized to target Uribe. Rubio’s comments sparked a diplomatic debate, with Petro defending Colombia’s judicial sovereignty and calling for respect toward the judges.

Legacy and Wider Context

Uribe’s presidency was marked by a hardline stance against leftist armed groups, most notably the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Under his leadership, Colombia achieved significant military victories that eventually led to peace talks and the disarmament of thousands of guerrilla fighters. However, his tenure is also linked to allegations of state crimes, such as extrajudicial killings by the military, which a 2017 truth commission highlighted as part of Colombia’s painful conflict history.

The legal process involving Uribe has spanned over a decade and reflects the ongoing struggle Colombia faces to reconcile its violent past with demands for justice and democracy. The verdict arrives less than a year before Colombia’s 2026 presidential elections, and many analysts believe it will play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s political future.
