Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the most well-known son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed, according to sources close to his family, his lawyer, and Libyan media reports. Libyan authorities later confirmed that his death was caused by gunshot wounds, marking a major development in Libya’s long and troubled political story.
Libya’s attorney general’s office said investigators and forensic doctors examined Saif al-Islam’s body on Tuesday. Their findings showed that he died after being shot. The office added that security forces are now working to identify those responsible and to prepare a criminal case. No suspects have yet been named.
Saif al-Islam was once seen as a powerful figure in Libya. Before the 2011 uprising that ended his father’s four-decade rule, he played a key role in shaping government policies. Many Libyans viewed him as a possible future leader during that time. However, his influence faded after the fall of the Gaddafi government and the chaos that followed.
In 2015, a Libyan court sentenced Saif al-Islam to death in absentia. The court accused him of helping suppress peaceful protests during the 2011 revolution. He was also charged by the International Criminal Court with alleged crimes against humanity. His lawyers tried but failed to have those charges dropped, leaving his legal status unresolved for years.
Despite his legal troubles, Saif al-Islam attempted a return to politics. In 2021, he registered as a candidate for Libya’s planned presidential election. That vote was later cancelled due to deep political divisions and instability across the country. After that, he largely disappeared from public view.
Libya has remained divided since the 2011 conflict, with rival governments, armed groups, and weak state institutions. Political violence and targeted killings are not uncommon, and the death of such a high-profile figure is likely to raise new questions about security and justice in the country.
For many Libyans, Saif al-Islam’s name remains closely linked to a painful period of history. His death may reopen old wounds and debates about accountability, reconciliation, and the country’s future path. Authorities say their investigation is ongoing and that more details will be shared as the case develops.
