Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport in Sweden experienced a significant disruption to air travel on Thursday evening due to a drone incident, leading authorities to initiate a suspected sabotage investigation. Operations are set to resume after this event caused major upheaval at the nation’s second largest airport.
Authorities reported the detection of one or more drones near Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport around 16:41 GMT. This unpredicted incident resulted in the rerouting or cancellation of numerous flights as safety protocols were enacted to secure the airspace and protect passengers.
The police promptly began a probe into what has been labeled as a suspected aviation sabotage. A police representative confirmed, “We have initiated an investigation into suspected aviation sabotage.” Later, Swedavia, the airport operator, declared that the situation was now under control, stating, “Police have informed us that the incident is resolved, and we intend to resume traffic shortly.”
This drone disruption is part of a rising trend of similar incidents in Europe, triggering heavy security alarms. Various officials and analysts have noted that these occurrences might be linked to hybrid warfare strategies, allegedly associated with Russia, a claim Moscow has denied.
Just days prior, Belgium experienced several drone sightings that forced several airports and a military airbase to temporarily shut down, with the defence minister labeling it a “coordinated attack.” Countries such as Norway and Denmark have also reported drone-related alarms recently, leading to abrupt closures at critical airports including Oslo and Copenhagen.
In Oslo, the police concluded an inquiry into suspected drone presence that caused airport shutdowns in September, citing a lack of conclusive evidence of drones. Meanwhile, Denmark similarly faced brief airport shutdowns due to reported drone activity in September.
As drone-related incidents escalate, the aviaiton sector is now reassessing safety protocols to combat drone threats that could incapacitate major transport points. The Gothenburg situation highlights how a single drone sighting can lead to substantial travel disruptions and prompt immediate national security actions.
Swedish officials have yet to reveal the individuals implicated in the recent drone activity, but the ongoing investigation intends to establish whether this event was a deliberate act of sabotage or an unlawful drone operation.
With air traffic resuming and enhanced security protocols in motion, authorities in Sweden are diligently monitoring the situation to avert future incidents of a similar nature.
