Starting 12th October 2025, the European Union will roll out the Entry/Exit System (EES), a modern digital system aimed at streamlining border management across the Schengen area. This includes all EU countries except Ireland and Cyprus, along with Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
Under the new system, all non-EU citizens entering the Schengen area for the first time will need to register personal details, including fingerprints, facial images, and passport information. Children under 12 will also be registered but will only require a photograph.
The EES will replace manual passport stamping with digital records, linking each traveller’s identity to their travel documents. This system is designed to monitor short-term visitors, prevent illegal migration, and combat identity fraud. Officials can also track whether non-visa travellers are adhering to the 90-day limit within any 180-day period.
Data collection will be gradually introduced at borders and is expected to be fully implemented by 10th April 2026, ensuring smoother entry processes and minimizing potential long queues. On subsequent visits, travellers will only need facial verification, making the system more convenient for frequent visitors.
With the EES, the EU aims to modernise border management while keeping travel seamless for legitimate visitors. Departure checks will also confirm compliance, helping authorities maintain accurate records of entries and exits.
