Dialogue Resumes Between Venezuela and US Following Maduro's Ouster

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On Friday, Venezuela announced the commencement of discussions with the United States to reinstate diplomatic ties, shortly after the apprehension of former president Nicolas Maduro by US forces.

This development reflects an increasing willingness to cooperate between the two nations following Maduro’s arrest and US President Donald Trump’s assertion that the US is facilitating Venezuela's transition.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil stated that President Delcy Rodriguez’s interim government has initiated an “exploratory diplomatic process” aimed at reopening embassies in both nations.

Officials from the US have confirmed that American diplomats have traveled to Caracas to evaluate the potential phased reopening of the US embassy, while Venezuela is poised to dispatch its own envoy to Washington.

Despite engaging in talks, Rodriguez condemned the military operation leading to Maduro’s arrest as “illegal and criminal,” asserting that Venezuela would respond through diplomatic channels.

Trump Advocates for Oil Investments

President Trump revealed he has paused further military actions following Venezuela’s commencement of political prisoner releases. Additionally, he intensified pressure on US oil corporations to invest in Venezuela, which boasts the world’s largest confirmed oil reserves.

During a meeting at the White House, Trump encouraged executives to act swiftly, claiming that Venezuela is now a secure environment for investment. However, ExxonMobil's CEO, Darren Woods, cautioned that significant reforms are essential for viable investment.

Trump also stated that oil companies would interface directly with Washington rather than Caracas, insisting that firms have signaled intentions for up to $100 billion in potential investments. He further mentioned plans for the US to sell large quantities of Venezuelan oil, with proceeds allocated as deemed fit, ensuring any funds sent to Venezuela are designated for purchasing American goods.

In parallel, US forces have maintained maritime operations in the Caribbean, intercepting oil tankers transporting Venezuelan crude. PDVSA, the state oil company, confirmed that one vessel has returned to Venezuelan territory under what it characterizes as a joint operation with the US.

Release of Political Prisoners

On Thursday, Venezuelan authorities initiated the release of political prisoners for the first time since Maduro was ousted during a raid on January 3 that Caracas claims resulted in 100 fatalities.

Families gathered outside prisons, eagerly awaiting the return of their loved ones, with Washington claiming credit for these releases.

Trump indicated he intends to meet with opposition leader Maria Corina Machado next week. Exiled opposition figure Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia emphasized that any democratic transition must acknowledge his allegedly disputed 2024 election victory, which Maduro had claimed amidst widespread allegations of fraud.

Ongoing Protests in Caracas

Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores, have been transported to New York for charges related to drug trafficking and other offenses. Despite the shift in power, protests persist in Caracas, with demonstrators demanding Maduro’s release and opposing US control over Venezuela’s oil resources.

“We lost people in the attack, and now they want our oil,” expressed one protester. “That pain remains.”
