Iran is currently experiencing its most significant protests in years, now in their 13th day amid a continuing internet shutdown. Initially sparked by economic difficulties, the demonstrations have transformed into broad demands for the end of the Islamic Republic, with some protesters even calling for a return to a monarchy. Reports indicate at least 48 protesters and 14 security personnel have lost their lives, with thousands arrested.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, has labeled the demonstrators as "troublemakers" aiming to please the US, accusing external forces of exacerbating the unrest. Concurrently, Iran has addressed the United Nations Security Council, attributing the violence and vandalism in the protests to US instigation.
US President Donald Trump has asserted that Iran is "in big trouble" and warned of severe repercussions should the government harm protesters, although he dismissed the idea of deploying troops. He also observed that the populace has unexpectedly taken control of several cities.
The ongoing internet blackout, imposed since last Thursday, has led to significant disruptions. Many cash machines have ceased functioning, leaving numerous citizens unable to purchase basic necessities and heightening public anxiety. Human rights organizations are expressing concerns over the potential for escalating violence and mass casualties.
International figures from the UK, Germany, and France have condemned the killings of protesters and called on Iran to uphold human rights and allow peaceful demonstrations. The United Nations has reiterated the importance of safeguarding the right to protest and the government's obligation to ensure public safety.
Iranian security forces have issued stern warnings, denouncing protesters as "armed vandals," and threatening legal consequences for any assaults on government or military properties. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has vowed to continue operations until the "complete defeat" of what they term as the enemy's plans.
Protests have proliferated across various cities, with protesters chanting slogans against the regime. Reports of fires and clashes have emerged from multiple locations. Families of victims are coming forward to identify their loved ones amid heavy media restrictions within Iran.
This recent wave of protests marks the most serious challenge the regime has faced since the deadly unrest of 2022 triggered by Mahsa Amini's death in custody. That incident resulted in hundreds of fatalities and numerous detentions, with rising fears of another severe crackdown.
