Bahrain Emphasizes Maritime Safety at IMO General Assembly

Post by : Mara Rahim

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Minister of Transport and Communications for Bahrain, participated in the 34th session of the General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) held in the United Kingdom. This significant gathering brought together maritime leaders and specialists from across the globe to deliberate on critical issues concerning global shipping safety, environmental protection, and sustainable practices in maritime development.

In his address, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla reinforced Bahrain’s active role within the IMO since its accession. He affirmed that the Kingdom is a strong proponent of the IMO's objectives, advocating for maritime safety, environmental stewardship, and the advancement of sustainable shipping on a global scale. The minister underscored the importance of international treaties and conventions in cultivating a secure and sustainable maritime environment in Bahrain.

Highlighting the Kingdom's compliance with international commitments, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla pointed out the implementation of a contemporary legislative and regulatory framework. A key highlight is the Maritime Law enacted in 2022, which abides by all international maritime conventions. This law lays down clear guidelines for the protection of lives, assets, and safe navigation within Bahraini waters, demonstrating Bahrain’s commitment to adhering to global standards while fostering a safe maritime environment.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla also emphasized Bahrain’s prioritization of marine environmental protection, framing the safeguarding of oceans and seas as a moral imperative. The Kingdom follows a legislative strategy founded primarily on the MARPOL Convention, which sets forth international guidelines to mitigate marine pollution. He noted efforts to join the remaining MARPOL annexes, which aligns with Bahrain’s national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, underlining its commitment to harmony between maritime development and ecological sustainability.

Referencing this year’s IMO theme of “Our Ocean, Our Commitment, Our Opportunity,” Dr. Shaikh Abdulla emphasized the oceans' vital role in the economy, environment, and human existence. Oceans serve as essential lifelines to millions, offering resources and transportation routes while providing ecological benefits. He assured that Bahrain remains dedicated to achieving both economic progress and environmental sustainability in its maritime sector.

The minister concluded by sharing Bahrain’s noteworthy strides in maritime governance, revealing that the Kingdom has adopted an advanced regulatory framework to enhance compliance with international maritime standards. These initiatives are aimed at augmenting ship safety, minimizing accidents, protecting marine biodiversity, and ensuring environmentally responsible operations. By enforcing these measures, Bahrain positions itself as a regional and global leader in maritime affairs.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla wrapped up his address by reaffirming Bahrain’s commitment to collaboration with the IMO and other global maritime organizations. He pledged that Bahrain would persist in fostering a proactive stance toward safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly maritime operations. The Kingdom’s approach interweaves legal, ethical, and technological solutions to secure safe and responsible maritime activities for future generations.
