Disney's popular networks, including ESPN, ABC, FX, Nat Geo, Nat Geo Wild, Disney Channel, and ABC News Live, have gone dark on YouTube TV after contract negotiations between the media giant and Google’s pay-TV platform broke down. The blackout began late Thursday, hours before the previous licensing agreement was set to expire.
YouTube TV, home to over 10 million subscribers, said Disney’s proposed terms would unfairly raise prices and benefit Disney’s own services like Hulu + Live TV. “Our contract with Disney has reached its renewal date, and we'll not agree to terms that disadvantage our members while benefiting Disney's TV products,” the platform posted on X.
Disney, in turn, criticized Google, saying its “market dominance” was being used to undercut industry-standard terms successfully negotiated with other distributors. A Disney spokesperson said the company remains committed to quickly resolving the dispute.
The disagreement follows a year of challenging negotiations for YouTube TV, which recently reached deals with NBCUniversal, Fox, and Paramount after similar threats of channel removals.
To soften the impact, YouTube TV announced it will provide subscribers with a $20 credit if Disney channels remain unavailable for an extended period. The blackout leaves millions of viewers without access to major sports, news, and entertainment programming, heightening the urgency for a resolution.
Subscribers are advised to monitor updates as both companies work toward a potential agreement to restore Disney’s networks on the platform.
