Delhi Struggles with Severe Cold Wave and Deteriorating Air Quality

Post by : Mara Rahim

The capital city of Delhi and its adjoining areas are bracing for yet another challenging week as the cold wave intensifies, accompanying a troubling rise in air pollution levels. After a brief respite, residents woke to thick fog, biting winds, and dangerously high air toxicity, complicating daily routines.

Reports from early Thursday show that the Air Quality Index (AQI) in several locations ranged from 350 to 400, placing them in the "very poor" category. Areas like Wazirpur and Bawana experienced even worse conditions, falling into the "severe" range. Such levels can pose significant health risks, even for those without pre-existing conditions. The blend of cold air and pollutants has led to discomfort, with many residents suffering from irritations in their eyes and respiratory issues.

For almost a month, Delhi has been grappling with elevated pollution levels. Although there was a minor improvement over the last few days, the overall outlook remains bleak. This temporary relief prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to revoke GRAP Stage 3 restrictions on Wednesday evening; however, the air quality continued to hover in the "very poor" bracket, underscoring the persistent nature of the dilemma.

Data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on Thursday indicated a fresh uptick in pollution levels. Wazirpur showed an AQI of 404, while Bawana recorded 403. Other areas including Vivek Vihar (395), Jahangirpuri (392), Anand Vihar (386), Narela (386), Burari (368), Chandni Chowk (368), Sonia Vihar (355), and RK Puram (354) exhibited similarly alarming figures. These statistics depict a grim reality where most of the city is inhaling heavily polluted air, with conditions likely to worsen if the weather persists.

A thick fog enveloped Delhi in the early hours, returning later in the day. This fog, laced with pollution particles, created a heavy smog layer, significantly impairing visibility and making road conditions hazardous. Commuters and morning joggers found it increasingly difficult to breathe in the dense haze, complicating outdoor activities considerably.

The cold season typically prevents pollution from dispersing, leading to a buildup of harmful particles close to the surface, which creates the notorious grey smog that plagues Delhi annually. The impact on public health is evident, as residents experience chronic cough, throat discomfort, and challenges in breathing. Medical professionals warn that prolonged exposure could elevate the risk of lung infections and other serious conditions.

Healthcare experts and environmentalists emphasize the potential dangers of extended exposure to polluted air and suggest a range of protective measures:

  • Limit outdoor activities unless absolutely necessary

  • Use high-quality masks when venturing outside

  • Keep windows shut to minimize indoor air pollution

  • Utilize air purifiers indoors if possible

  • Stay hydrated and consume warm liquids

  • Avoid intense physical exertion outdoors

Experts stress the importance of these precautions to safeguard vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular issues.

Residents across the Delhi NCR region express growing anxiety as pollution levels show no signs of abating. Parents voice concerns over their children commuting to school in such hazardous conditions, while senior citizens find it increasingly difficult to step outside even for essential errands. Daily commuters are frequently experiencing headaches, irritation, and discomfort in their chests due to ongoing exposure to smog.

While GRAP Stage 3 restrictions were recently lifted, the escalating pollution may compel authorities to reconsider reinstating these measures. Meteorological experts assert that significant decreases in pollution will only occur with the arrival of strong winds or rainfall. Until then, residents should diligently adhere to safety protocols to protect their health.
