James Webb Telescope Unveils Most Comprehensive Dark Matter Map

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Researchers have produced the most comprehensive dark matter map to date, utilizing the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Dark matter, an elusive substance, constitutes the majority of the universe's matter yet remains invisible, emitting no light or radiation.

Only about 15 percent of the universe comprises ordinary matter—such as stars, planets, and living beings—while dark matter accounts for the remaining 85 percent, studied primarily through its gravitational influence on galaxies and light.

In this groundbreaking study, scientists examined the light from approximately 250,000 distant galaxies, observing how it curves while traversing the cosmos—a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing. This effect assists in pinpointing the locations of dark matter.

This novel map boasts double the resolution of previous charts created by the Hubble Space Telescope and probes deeper into space, portraying the universe as it existed 8 to 10 billion years ago, a pivotal era in galactic development.

Detailed insights into the cosmic web emerge from the map, illustrating clusters of galaxies, immense dark matter filaments, and areas containing less matter.

With its advanced infrared capabilities, the James Webb Telescope captures fainter, more distant galaxies in far sharper detail than Hubble, enabling the construction of more precise dark matter maps.

The findings are published in the prestigious journal Nature Astronomy, with NASA scientist Diana Scognamiglio at the helm. She described the telescope as “like a new pair of glasses for the universe,” offering enhanced clarity to previously obscured structures.

Targeting the COSMOS region in the Sextans constellation, this map will significantly aid future research into the universe's formation and evolution.
