China Boosts Green Power with 47.7% Capacity Growth

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

China has made another major leap in its clean energy journey, with newly installed renewable power capacity soaring by 47.7 percent year-on-year in the first three quarters of 2025. The National Energy Administration (NEA) reported that the country added 310 million kilowatts of renewable energy capacity during this period — a clear sign of its rapid green energy transition.

This growth represented 84.4 percent of China’s total new power generation capacity, showing how renewable sources are now dominating the country’s energy expansion.

Breaking it down, the new installations included 7.16 million kW from hydropower, 61.09 million kW from wind, 240 million kW from solar, and 1.05 million kW from biomass. Solar energy led the charge, contributing the largest share to the clean power increase.

China’s expanding renewable infrastructure has also strengthened its electricity supply. From January to September, renewable sources produced 2.89 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity — up 15.5 percent from a year earlier. This now accounts for about 40 percent of the country’s total power generation, highlighting a solid shift toward sustainable energy use.

On the investment front, China continues to channel massive funds into green development. In the first eight months of the year, completed investments in key energy projects totaled 1.97 trillion yuan (approximately US$278 billion) — an 18.2 percent rise compared with last year.

The surge in renewable capacity and steady financial backing reflect China’s firm commitment to building a cleaner, more resilient energy future while reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
