6 Fatalities in Bangladesh due to 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake

Post by : Raina Nasser

A significant 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Bangladesh on Friday morning, leading to panicked reactions in Dhaka and adjacent areas, with six fatalities reported. The tremor occurred at 10:38 AM local time, approximately 14 kilometres from Narsingdi and in close proximity to Dhaka.

Residents across Dhaka experienced mild to moderate shakes, with lights, fans, and hanging decor visibly vibrating. Many fled their homes, offices, and schools seeking safety. Numerous individuals shared footage on social media, capturing both the tremors and the immediate public response.

The quake's shallow depth amplified the surface shaking. Experts noted that Bangladesh is situated in a seismically active area, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates intersect, rendering it susceptible to earthquakes that can also impact nearby nations like India, Myanmar, and Nepal.

Sadly, the earthquake resulted in the deaths of six individuals, primarily due to debris and structural failures in Narsingdi and surrounding locales. Several injuries were reported, and emergency medical services have been deployed for swift assistance.

Although the tremors were alarming, authorities confirmed that rescue operations are in progress. Teams in Dhaka, Narsingdi, and neighboring districts are evaluating buildings, bridges, and other public structures for safety. Residents have been advised to stay calm, adhere to safety measures, and refrain from disseminating unverified information about the earthquake.

The quake also impacted several areas in eastern India, including West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, where residents experienced light tremors. Social media users in locales like Kolkata, Cooch Behar, and Dinajpur reported swaying walls and moving fans, illustrating the quake's extensive reach.

Authorities have stressed the need for preparedness in earthquake-prone areas. Citizens have been urged to avoid tall structures and refrain from using elevators immediately after experiencing tremors. Officials have also cautioned of potential aftershocks and advised residents to remain vigilant for updates from official sources.

This incident has reignited conversations about the necessity for enhanced earthquake preparedness and improved building codes in Bangladesh and its neighboring regions. While this quake resulted in tragic losses, experts have emphasized that proactive strategies can mitigate future fatalities.
