Apple Inc. is on the verge of reclaiming its title as the world's leading smartphone manufacturer by 2025, fueled by phenomenal interest in the newly launched iPhone 17 series and a significant global upgrade trend.
This shift represents a turning point in the smartphone landscape, where Samsung has reigned supreme for over a decade. Research from Counterpoint indicates that Apple’s latest offerings have reignited enthusiasm in established markets while also capturing growth in emerging areas.
The iPhone 17 lineup, encompassing four models, has attracted substantial crowds in Apple Stores, with the ultra-thin iPhone Air drawing particular attention. Reports of long lines in both the US and China have contributed to Apple achieving double-digit sales growth year-over-year in these pivotal markets.
Apple's success is further aided by improving trade relations between the US and China and a declining dollar, conditions benefiting sales in numerous developing nations. Analysts point out that a significant number of users who purchased smartphones during the pandemic are now in the replacement cycle, further propelling Apple’s ascent.
Industry projections suggest a 10% increase in iPhone shipments for 2025, alongside a 4.6% rise for Samsung. If current trends persist, Apple is anticipated to attain a market share of 19.4% globally—its highest in years—regaining the top spot for the first time since 2011.
Moreover, analysts recognize the burgeoning secondhand iPhone market, with nearly 358 million pre-owned units sold between 2023 and mid-2025, establishing a substantial base of potential upgrade customers for upcoming models.
Looking forward, Apple plans to expand its offerings with a foldable iPhone and an economical iPhone 17e expected to debut in 2026, along with a significant design update in 2027. Industry experts suggest these developments could sustain Apple’s growth momentum amidst escalating worldwide competition.
With the iPhone 17 series exceeding sales forecasts and the market entering a revitalized growth phase, Apple appears closer than ever to regaining its former smartphone leadership—an aspiration it has pursued for over a decade.
