Anne Hathaway Takes on a Pop Star Role in Mother Mary

Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway embodies a dynamic pop star in the highly anticipated film Mother Mary, which delves into the emotional complexities of a former friendship.

In the movie, Hathaway portrays the titular character, “Mother Mary,” who faces challenges ahead of her comeback concert following a baffling incident. To seek clarity, she journeys to England to consult with fashion designer Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel. Their meeting at Anselm’s countryside workshop rekindles emotions they had both buried over a decade.

This reconnection unearths a mix of feelings—anger, pain, and cherished memories—while simultaneously illustrating the enduring bond they once shared.

Hathaway disclosed her rigorous preparation for this role, including up to eight-hour daily dance rehearsals and a full year dedicated to honing her vocal skills. She cited global sensation Beyoncé as a vital influence and expressed her commitment to delivering an outstanding performance.

“I aimed to give it my all, not just to perform well, but to truly shine,” Hathaway stated during the London premiere. She also acknowledged the character's challenges with fame and self-identity.

The film, directed and written by David Lowery, comes from production house A24, featuring original tracks from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs. Hathaway uniquely contributes to the soundtrack with seven songs, aptly named Mother Mary: Greatest Hits.

Director David Lowery commended Hathaway’s dedication, emphasizing her effort to make the music feel genuinely impactful.

Mother Mary is set for theatrical release in the United States and the United Kingdom this Friday.
