Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has officially launched the Abu Dhabi University Cancer Research Institute (ADU-CRI), a pivotal development aimed at enhancing the UAE’s healthcare and research landscape. This institute is set to advance cancer research and personalized treatment methodologies, marking a significant progression for both medical and academic sectors in the region.
The launch ceremony took place at ADU’s Innovation Center, featuring a gathering of the university's senior leadership, representatives from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, along with stakeholders from various healthcare and research organizations. This initiative aligns with ADU’s commitment to scientific innovation and educational excellence, in line with the national vision outlined in the We the UAE 2031 agenda.
Through ADU-CRI, the university aims to establish itself as a central figure in cancer research, merging academic insights with practical clinical applications. With a focus on translational research, the institute seeks to expedite the journey of scientific findings from laboratories to healthcare settings, fostering collaboration among researchers, clinicians, government entities, and industry leaders to tackle regionally pertinent cancer issues.
The institute comprises five targeted research divisions: genomics and bioinformatics, biomarker exploration, drug development, bioengineering and biosensors, as well as public health studies. Each division addresses key facets of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, adopting a comprehensive and multidisciplinary research strategy.
ADU-CRI is outfitted with state-of-the-art laboratory technologies such as flow cytometry, Luminex systems, quantitative PCR, sequencing platforms, and specialized tissue culture facilities. These tools provide researchers with the capability to execute both preclinical and clinical studies, particularly focusing on UAE-identified cancer priority areas. Moreover, a dedicated bioengineering lab supports initiatives in biosensor development and data analysis for next-generation medical research.
In addition, ADU-CRI has established robust partnerships with top-tier healthcare and research institutions in Abu Dhabi. These collaborations have already resulted in several active projects, including clinical research aimed at enhancing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, studies utilizing biobanked samples for intricate analysis, and research initiatives exploring innovative strategies in personalized cancer medicine.
Current investigations at the institute include research on biomarkers in triple-negative breast cancer, liquid biopsy techniques for early detection of lung cancer, and exploration of genetic components associated with cancer metastasis. These projects collectively strive to improve early diagnosis, refine treatment accuracy, and bolster evidence-based healthcare policies across the UAE.
The establishment of ADU-CRI underscores Abu Dhabi University’s significant role in advancing national healthcare objectives through dedicated research and innovation. By leveraging advanced infrastructure, strategic alliances, and research tailored to local needs, the institute is poised to make substantial contributions to cancer care progress and the enduring evolution of the UAE’s life sciences sector.
