Ex-Official Alleges Pressure Over Mandelson's US Appointment

A former senior official from the Foreign Office has alleged that he felt considerable pressure to sanction the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the ambassador to the United States, intensifying the political storm around this choice.

Oliver Robbins, recently relieved from his duties as the permanent undersecretary, informed lawmakers that there was a push to expedite Mandelson’s role in early 2025. He remarked that there was “constant pressure” from top officials, including Keir Starmer’s office, to facilitate quick clearance for Mandelson especially during the run-up to Donald Trump's inauguration.

The controversy focuses on concerns raised during Mandelson's security vetting by the UK's clearance authority, which categorized him as a “borderline case” prior to approving his clearance. Robbins noted that while there were apprehensions, officials believed that potential risks were manageable, leading to approval under specific conditions.

Starmer has accused Robbins of inadequately disclosing the gravity of these vetting issues before the ambassadorial selection. He asserted that had he been properly informed, he might have reconsidered proceeding with the appointment.
