A former senior official from the Foreign Office has alleged that he felt considerable pressure to sanction the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the ambassador to the United States, intensifying the political storm around this choice.
Oliver Robbins, recently relieved from his duties as the permanent undersecretary, informed lawmakers that there was a push to expedite Mandelson’s role in early 2025. He remarked that there was “constant pressure” from top officials, including Keir Starmer’s office, to facilitate quick clearance for Mandelson especially during the run-up to Donald Trump's inauguration.
The controversy focuses on concerns raised during Mandelson's security vetting by the UK's clearance authority, which categorized him as a “borderline case” prior to approving his clearance. Robbins noted that while there were apprehensions, officials believed that potential risks were manageable, leading to approval under specific conditions.
Starmer has accused Robbins of inadequately disclosing the gravity of these vetting issues before the ambassadorial selection. He asserted that had he been properly informed, he might have reconsidered proceeding with the appointment. Robbins, on his part, has pushed back against this claim, defending his adherence to existing protocols that limit the dissemination of sensitive vetting details.
The situation has been further complicated by Mandelson's past ties to Jeffrey Epstein, which have sparked widespread public concern. Following revelations regarding these associations, Mandelson lost his position months after taking office, prompting apologies from the prime minister.
In his statements, Robbins warned that withdrawing the appointment could have jeopardized diplomatic relations with the United States. He also expressed bewilderment over his own dismissal and has hinted at potential legal action to contest the decision.
As political tensions rise, opposition figures are increasing their critique of Starmer, arguing that the management of the appointment exposes flaws in judgment and transparency. The government maintains that all appropriate processes were observed.
As developments unfold, the ongoing controversy presents new challenges for the prime minister, highlighting issues of accountability and decision-making within the highest echelons of governance.
