Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has expressed his commitment to working alongside U.S. President Donald Trump, Saudi Arabia, France, and the United Nations to implement a UN-backed peace plan aimed at resolving the Gaza conflict and advancing a two-state solution with Israel.
The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed a seven-page declaration this month, originating from a conference held in July by Saudi Arabia and France. This declaration seeks to promote a two-state solution and end the ongoing Gaza war between Israel and Hamas militants. Notably, the United States and Israel boycotted the conference and have rejected the international efforts.
In parallel, President Trump has introduced a 21-point peace plan for the Middle East and Gaza. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff shared this plan during a meeting with leaders of several Muslim-majority countries on the sidelines of this week's UN General Assembly.
Addressing the UN General Assembly via video, President Abbas condemned the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians, stating that such actions do not represent the Palestinian people or their legitimate struggle for freedom and independence. He reaffirmed Gaza's status as part of Palestine under Palestinian Authority governance, excluding Hamas, and emphasized the need for disarmament of militant factions.
Hamas criticized President Abbas's stance, arguing that the disarmament of Palestinian factions under occupation is unjust. The group maintains that their right to bear arms is essential for resistance against Israeli occupation.
Israel's Foreign Minister dismissed Abbas's statements as insincere, viewing them as insufficient to address the complexities of the conflict. The international community remains divided on the best approach to achieving peace in the region, with ongoing debates over the viability of a two-state solution and the role of various Palestinian factions.
