The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly began on Tuesday evening at the UN headquarters in New York. Representatives from all 193 member countries gathered in the large assembly hall, marking the official opening of a new year for global discussions.
The new President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, took charge and gave her first speech. She spoke openly about the many problems facing the world today. She mentioned the pain of children in Gaza who do not have enough food, girls in some countries who are not allowed to go to school, and the 808 million people still living in extreme poverty.
“Our world is suffering,” Baerbock said. “But imagine how much worse things would be without the United Nations.”
She explained that this year will not be an “ordinary session.” She pointed out that the world is facing overlapping crises—wars, conflicts, hunger, poverty, and divisions among nations. Despite these challenges, she reminded everyone that the UN remains a place of hope, where countries can still work together.
Baerbock stressed the importance of UN agencies like UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO). These organizations provide life-saving food, health care, and education to millions of people worldwide.
She called on countries to modernize the UN system and make it “fit for the 21st century.” To do this, she urged governments to follow through with the “Pact for the Future,” which was adopted last year, and to focus more on meaningful results rather than endless procedures.
“The General Assembly must stay true to its mission and deliver on its promises,” Baerbock told delegates. She promised that during her leadership, she will serve all 193 members equally, act as a “bridge builder”, and ensure that every country, big or small, has its voice heard.
Priorities for the Year Ahead
Baerbock outlined some key tasks for her term:
* Implementing the UN80 reform agenda to make the organization more effective.
* Guiding the process of choosing the next UN Secretary-General, a major decision that will shape the future of the UN.
* Advancing peace, sustainable development, and human rights across the world.
Earlier in the day, the outgoing President, Philémon Yang, closed the 79th session. He highlighted some achievements, such as discussions on humanitarian law, controlling small arms, sustainable development, and fighting child labour. He also mentioned efforts to promote multilingualism and the role of women in peace mediation.
With this transition, Baerbock has made history by becoming only the fifth woman ever to lead the UN General Assembly since it was created in 1945.
Why This Session Matters
The UN General Assembly is where every country in the world, big or small, has an equal vote. Unlike the UN Security Council, where a few powerful nations hold veto powers, the General Assembly reflects the voice of the global community. The 80th session will be closely watched because it comes at a time of rising wars, climate challenges, economic struggles, and growing inequality.
Baerbock’s speech made it clear that the UN must not waste time on bureaucracy but instead take bold steps to solve problems that directly affect millions of people. Her promise to act as a unifying leader gives hope that even in a divided world, countries can still come together under the UN’s banner to work for peace, development, and human dignity.
