At the BRIDGE Summit 2025, Hasan Youssef took the stage with his solo show “A Decade of Satire. Did It Work?”, reflecting on his unusual role as a comedian in today’s world.
Youssef shared how his political takes often go viral more than his punchlines. “People sometimes take my jokes more seriously than intended,” he remarked, noting the irony of the digital age: “A TikTok clip of mine can reach more eyes than a UN resolution, and my posts on Gaza get more attention than a 50-page human rights report.”
The comedian turned the question of satire’s effectiveness on its head. He called irony a “language of resistance” and emphasized how audiences increasingly look to comedians—not experts—for commentary on power and politics. “We’re not necessarily smarter, but we’re pointing out the absurdity of the world,” Youssef said.
He explained that expecting satire to fix real-world problems is a misunderstanding. “Satire wasn’t meant to stop wars, end hunger, or save the climate. Its purpose is smaller, yet vital—it keeps us human, keeps us laughing, and reminds us there’s still light even in chaos.”
Reflecting on the past decade, Youssef said satire has succeeded in its own way: by keeping people engaged and alert, preventing despair, and maintaining a sense of humanity in a system built to turn citizens into passive observers.
Concluding his session, he promised to continue crafting jokes that challenge those in power, believing that even small acts of humor can make a difference and preserve laughter in a world under pressure.
The BRIDGE Summit 2025 wrapped up successfully in Abu Dhabi after three days of thought-provoking sessions.
