Deaf Palestinian Shares Gaza Struggles Using Sign Language on Social Media

In the heart of Gaza’s relentless conflict and devastation, a voice unlike most has risen—a voice that speaks without sound yet carries a message about survival, hardship, and hope. Basem Alhabel, a 30-year-old deaf Palestinian man, has become a vital messenger of Gaza’s painful realities by using sign language videos on social media. His mission is clear: to share the stories of Gazans, especially those who are deaf or hard of hearing, whose voices often go unheard amidst the chaos of war.

With more than 140,000 followers on Instagram, Basem calls himself Gaza’s first deaf journalist. Amidst bombings, destroyed homes, and widespread hunger, he films footage of daily struggles using sign language to communicate directly with the deaf community around the world and anyone willing to watch and understand. His camera captures scenes that many photojournalists might not focus on — the silence of deaf individuals trying to navigate a war zone, children scavenging for food, families seeking shelter in overcrowded schools. Each video is a plea and a testimony, bridging a gap between Gaza and the outside world.

Life Under Fire: A Deaf Perspective

For nearly two years, Gaza has been engulfed in violence due to ongoing conflict, leaving thousands dead and countless others injured or displaced. Basem’s story is intertwined with this tragedy. Forced to leave his home after the violence escalated, he and his family found refuge in a school converted into a shelter. He describes cramped conditions, lacking privacy or comfort, yet amidst this hardship, he continues to record and share.

What makes Basem’s work exceptional is not only his bravery but the unique lens through which he presents Gaza’s crisis. Being deaf, he understands deeply the challenges faced by others with disabilities who cannot hear alarms, explosions, or warnings. His videos highlight their particular vulnerabilities. He often films while wearing protective gear, walking amid ruins or footage of children picking flour mixed with dirt to survive the acute food shortages afflicting Gaza.

Basem said through his interpreter, Mohammed Moshtaha, that he wants the world to hear the silent voices — the deaf, the disabled, and the many suffering in Gaza. His videos aim to evoke empathy and action, calling attention not just to the conflict but to the humanitarian crisis unfolding daily.

A Platform of Hope and Awareness

Basem’s social media presence is more than documentation; it is a form of activism and journalism tailored for and by the deaf community. Videos are posted with the help of interpreters to reach a wider audience, ensuring his message transcends language barriers. This digital storytelling not only provides information but also preserves dignity and identity for those whose stories rarely make the headlines.

His work exposes grim realities — bombing aftermaths, starvation risks, and the desperate need for ceasefire and aid — while also expressing a longing for peace and normalcy. Basem expresses a wish for happiness and safety for his children and all people of Gaza, hoping his efforts encourage international awareness and intervention.

The Broader Context

The Gaza Strip faces humanitarian challenges amplified by prolonged conflict, blockade, and scarce resources. Reports indicate over 60,000 deaths during recent escalations, with medical and food supplies critically low. For vulnerable populations, including the deaf community, the hardships are even more severe.

Basem’s initiative comes at a crucial time when many feel the voices of Gaza are drowned out by global politics and media over-saturation. He reminds watchers of the human cost and the urgent need for solidarity and support.
