X Introduces 'About This Account' Feature for Enhanced Profile Verification

Post by : Raina Nasser

The social media platform X has launched a new tool known as "About This Account", designed to assist users in confirming the legitimacy of profiles. This feature provides crucial information including the account's geographical location, creation date, and frequency of username changes, particularly essential in light of the increasing prevalence of bot accounts and AI-generated profiles.

The feature rollout followed extensive internal deliberations at X. Initially, it was accessible only to X employees, including the head of product, Nikita Bier, but is now becoming available to a wider user base.

To use this feature, users need to click on the "Joined" date displayed on any X profile. This will navigate them to a page that showcases vital details such as:

  • Date of account creation

  • Linked geographical location

  • Frequency of username modifications and the most recent modification date

  • The channel through which the user accesses X (like Google Play or the App Store)

This initiative is aimed at empowering users to make well-informed assessments about profile credibility. For instance, an account that actively engages in local discussions yet appears newly created from a distant location may be suspected of being coordinated or fraudulent.

Post-launch, some users reported discrepancies, with certain accounts reflecting incorrect geographical data or misleading creation dates. For instance, one individual indicated their profile indicated a U.S. origin while they reside in Canada. X quickly acknowledged these issues, relating them to factors like VPN usage or internet service providers such as Starlink that could distort data.

As a result, the feature was briefly suspended for some users but has since been reactivated. X is actively addressing these concerns and is looking to implement additional clarifications regarding location data influenced by VPNs.

The "About This Account" feature is part of a broader initiative to enhance transparency across social media. Similar functionalities can be found on platforms like Instagram, which provide profile insights aimed at helping users identify authentic accounts.

In summary, X’s introduction of the "About This Account" feature seeks to diminish misinformation and bolster trust by supplying users with clear, accessible information regarding their online interactions.
