The UAE observed World Tsunami Awareness Day, underscoring the need for sustained public preparedness against tsunami hazards. This year’s theme, "Be Tsunami Ready – Invest in Tsunami Preparedness," framed calls for stronger mitigation measures and improved early-warning capacity across vulnerable coastlines.
Tsunamis pose substantial risks to life, infrastructure and ecosystems, particularly in low-lying coastal zones. The United Nations designates the day to focus attention on risk awareness, preparedness and rapid response mechanisms that can reduce long-term societal and environmental fallout.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) played an active role in the observance, outlining initiatives to lower exposure and raise resilience. Measures highlighted include upgrades to the Tsunami Early Warning System for countries bordering the North-West Indian Ocean, coordination-focused regional workshops to refine evacuation protocols, and strategic use of media channels to speed alert dissemination.
Domestically, the NCM runs awareness campaigns, delivers targeted training and takes part in major exercises such as IOWave25. These drills and capacity-building activities are designed to validate evacuation plans, test interoperability and embed preparedness among communities and authorities.
Through these efforts the UAE is positioning itself as a proactive partner in disaster risk management, reinforcing domestic protection for residents while contributing to wider regional and international collaboration on tsunami risk reduction.
