On 14 November, World Diabetes Day 2025 aims to remind individuals to reflect on their daily lifestyles, particularly their dietary habits and exercise routines. Diabetes has become a significant health issue in India, with the World Health Organization reporting that around 77 million adults currently manage diabetes. An additional 25 million are prediabetic, potentially facing diabetes if preventative measures are not taken. This highlights the urgency in addressing diabetes in the country.
Healthcare professionals alert that diabetic adults have a two to three times increased likelihood of suffering from heart attacks or strokes. Therefore, health experts emphasize that adopting simple changes, such as starting one's day with appropriate foods and drinks, can significantly impact health.
Having a proper breakfast is vital. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition in 2019 indicated that individuals who skip breakfast may be at a greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Prolonged fasting leads to spikes in blood sugar once eating resumes.
Another research conducted in 2023 revealed that those consuming breakfast after 9 am face a 59% higher risk of developing diabetes compared to individuals who eat before 8 am. This reinforces the idea that breakfast is indeed the most critical meal of the day.
Experts suggest incorporating simple, natural morning beverages into your daily routine as they can enhance food digestion, minimize inflammation, and stabilize blood sugar fluctuations. Upasana Parv Kalra, head of clinical nutrition and dietetics at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Dwarka, mentions that these drinks can be easily prepared at home using common ingredients.
Here are six beneficial morning beverages that can assist in regulating blood sugar levels:
Methi (Fenugreek) Water
Soaking fenugreek seeds overnight and drinking the water in the morning helps slow sugar absorption and improves digestion.
Ajwain (Carom Seed) Water
Ajwain water aids in reducing inflammation and promoting better digestion, while also preventing sudden blood sugar spikes.
Ashwagandha Drink
Ashwagandha helps reduce stress and promote calmness, which can help maintain steady blood sugar levels.
Cinnamon Water
Cinnamon is recognized for aiding insulin efficiency, which simplifies sugar management in the body.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry) Juice
Rich in Vitamin C, amla enhances metabolism, allowing for healthier sugar management.
Ginger Water
Ginger aids in inflammation reduction and boosts stomach health, helping to prevent sugar spikes post-meal.
While these morning beverages are not medicinal, they can complement a healthy lifestyle. Nutrition experts advise maintaining balanced meals, engaging in regular exercise, ensuring adequate sleep, and limiting sugar intake.
World Diabetes Day serves as a reminder that even minor daily habits contribute to long-term health. Initiating the day with the right beverage is a straightforward yet effective step towards better health, particularly in India, where diabetes continues to rise.
