World Bank Sanctions $225 Million for Syria's Water and Health Initiatives

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant move, the World Bank has sanctioned $225 million in grants to bolster public services in Syria, with a focus on the water and health sectors. This financing is provided through the International Development Association (IDA).

The funding encompasses two pivotal projects. The first is the Syria Emergency Water Security and Resilient Services Project, which is set to receive $150 million. Its primary objective is to restore water supply systems and upgrade wastewater infrastructure in high-density areas where services have been compromised.

The second initiative, the Syria Health System Recovery and Strengthening Project, is allocated $75 million. This project aims to enhance access to quality healthcare and to strengthen the capabilities of Syria’s public health system.

Collectively, these initiatives are projected to benefit approximately 4.5 million individuals throughout Syria. The emphasis is on ensuring dependable access to clean water, enhancing sanitation, and improving healthcare services.

Jean-Christophe Carret emphasized that reconstructing infrastructure and reinstating essential services are vital elements for Syria’s recovery. Furthermore, he noted that advancing public services will improve living standards, bolster social stability, and facilitate the return of refugees and displaced individuals.

This financial assistance represents a crucial stride in Syria’s path towards recovery and stabilization by addressing pressing needs in fundamental services.
