WorkSafeBC Publishes Data on 138 Workplace Fatalities in 2025

Post by : Shweta

The recent report from WorkSafeBC reveals that British Columbia faced 138 work-related fatalities in 2025. This data underscores persistent safety issues within various industries, with occupational diseases identified as the predominant factor in these deaths.

Among the recorded fatalities, 79 were attributed to occupational diseases. Alarmingly, 36 of these were linked to asbestos exposure, highlighting the enduring health dangers that certain workers confront. These conditions tend to surface over time, emphasizing the need for effective prevention and early detection strategies.

In addition to disease-related incidents, there were 41 deaths caused by traumatic injuries in the workplace. These accidents included instances of falls, being struck by objects, and mishaps involving machinery. Such cases continue to elicit concerns regarding safety protocols and risk mitigation strategies in high-risk fields, particularly construction and manufacturing.

Furthermore, 18 fatalities stemmed from work-related traffic accidents, revealing the dangers faced by employees required to drive as part of their job. This broad spectrum of incidents illustrates the various threats present in different workplace settings.

Despite these alarming statistics, officials observed that the numbers for 2025 signify an improvement compared to earlier years, with workplace fatalities declining from 181 in 2022 and 146 in 2024.

The report also highlights a pronounced gender disparity, as men represented 134 of the 138 fatalities, while only four women perished in work-related incidents. This trend mirrors the heightened presence of men in risky professions.

This report comes in advance of the annual Day of Mourning, which honors workers who have died on the job. Observances are planned throughout the province, including at the legislature in Victoria and in various communities.

Officials from WorkSafeBC emphasized that each statistic represents a unique human story and urged employers, workers, and communities alike to focus on enhancing safety measures and taking significant steps to avert future tragedies.
