Winnipeg Rallies with Jewish Community After Sydney Hanukkah Attack

Post by : Mina Rahman

Winnipeg's Mayor Scott Gillingham gathered with Jewish leaders and community members at City Hall to illuminate the second menorah candle, sending a powerful message of unity after the tragic Hanukkah attack in Sydney, Australia, which claimed 15 lives, including a 10-year-old child, a rabbi, and a Holocaust survivor. The ceremony took place amid global mourning, as many more remain hospitalized following the assault at Bondi Beach.

Speaking to approximately 40 attendees, Mayor Gillingham stated, “There is no room for hate or terror in our world. We stand with you.” He highlighted the necessity of community support in the wake of such tragedies, reinforcing the message that fear should not dictate how traditions are celebrated. The event, held outside the mayorship, featured elevated security, with police present to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Local Jewish figures underscored the importance of public gatherings like the menorah lighting amidst rising global antisemitism. Rob Waldman, president of the Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue, shared how personal celebrations now feel inadequate in a world rife with security concerns. “The best way to combat antisemitism is to express our Judaism proudly and unite together,” he remarked. “I felt connected to the beach tragedy; thus, being present today is vital.”

Dan Petrenko, artistic director of the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, reinforced the notion that collective gatherings bolster the community’s identity and resilience. “We need to spread light in our world,” he asserted. “Fear should not overshadow our ability to celebrate our holidays and heritage.”

Gustavo Zentner, vice-president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs in Manitoba, emphasized the significance of transitioning from words of solidarity to actionable measures. He urged law enforcement and government officials to acknowledge and protect the Jewish community adequately.

Concluding the event, Mayor Gillingham reflected on Hanukkah's symbolic essence. “Light triumphs over darkness. May the menorah inspire comfort, strength, and hope for all,” he stated. Through their gathering to honor the festival of lights, Winnipeg's Jewish community and civic leaders delivered a strong message: that hate and terror will not extinguish their spirit.
