The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted SpaceX the green light to launch 7,500 more second-generation Starlink satellites, a significant move that will greatly expand its satellite internet network. This decision effectively doubles the number of Gen2 Starlink satellites approved for operation, bringing the total to an impressive 15,000 satellites orbiting our planet.
Alongside the increase in satellites, the FCC has also allowed SpaceX to improve the operational capabilities of these satellites. They can now function across five distinct frequency bands, optimizing spectrum usage. This upgrade is anticipated to enhance the capacity of the network and provide improved coverage.
Additionally, the FCC has lifted previous limitations that restricted overlapping satellite coverage. By removing these constraints, SpaceX can offer more flexible, interlacing satellite signals, which will enhance internet performance and reliability—particularly in areas that have been historically underserved.
These advancements are in line with SpaceX's mission to broaden global internet access by providing faster and more reliable broadband services via its Starlink satellite network. The expanded fleet and improved operational features are set to significantly elevate the quality and reach of internet services around the world, particularly in remote and underserved locales.
