Wrexham’s remarkable football journey under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney reached another unforgettable chapter as the Welsh club knocked Premier League side Nottingham Forest out of the FA Cup. In a dramatic match filled with twists, Wrexham won 4-3 on penalties after the teams were level at the end of extra time.
The lower-league side showed no fear against their top-flight opponents. Wrexham dominated the first half and took a strong lead through goals from Liberato Cacace and Oliver Rathbone. Their confident start stunned Forest and gave the home fans belief that another cup upset was possible.
Nottingham Forest responded in the second half. Igor Jesus pulled one goal back, but Wrexham quickly restored their two-goal cushion when Dominic Hyam headed in from close range with just over 15 minutes remaining. At that stage, Wrexham looked set for a famous win in normal time.
However, Forest substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi changed the game. He scored twice, including a fine equaliser in the 89th minute, dragging his team back into the contest and forcing extra time. Despite both sides pushing for a winner, neither could score again.
With FA Cup replays no longer played, the match went to a penalty shootout. Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo became the hero of the night. He saved spot-kicks from Igor Jesus and Omari, while Wrexham players Josh Windass, Callum Doyle, George Thomason and Jay Rodriguez calmly converted their penalties to seal a historic victory.
The result adds to Wrexham’s fairytale rise since Reynolds and McElhenney bought the club in 2021. The team has already achieved three straight promotions and is enjoying strong form in the Championship. This FA Cup win further highlights how far the club has come in a short time.
Forest manager Sean Dyche was openly critical of his team’s first-half performance, calling it unacceptable. He admitted that while the second-half substitutes showed quality, the slow start proved costly against a confident and well-organised Wrexham side.
The FA Cup continues to deliver surprises, with other lower-league teams also enjoying success in the same round. Wrexham’s victory stands out as one of the biggest shocks, reminding fans why the FA Cup is known for its magic and unpredictability.
As the competition moves forward, Wrexham will dream of going even further, carrying the hopes of their supporters and continuing a story that feels more like a movie script than real life.
