During the celebrations of World Environment Day and World Ocean Day, General Secretary and President To Lam called for enhanced efforts both nationally and globally to safeguard the environment, fast-track green transformation, and guarantee the long-term health of oceans. In his policy article, he asserted that environmental preservation should be a cornerstone of economic development and national security.
President To Lam pointed out that the global community is grappling with unparalleled environmental issues, such as global warming, ascending sea levels, loss of biodiversity, severe weather occurrences, and increasing marine pollution. He cautioned that reliance on resource-heavy development models could jeopardize economic growth and the ecological systems essential for human existence.
The urgency of this issue is particularly pronounced for Vietnam. With over 3,260 kilometers of coastline and millions residing in coastal and river delta areas, the nation faces significant vulnerabilities to climate change, saline intrusion, coastal degradation, and natural catastrophes. The government advocates for sustainable development through the incorporation of environmental stewardship in all economic planning phases.
The Vietnamese leader reiterated the country's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, advancing renewable energy initiatives, minimizing plastic waste, safeguarding biodiversity, and promoting a circular economy. He emphasized that green growth should be perceived not merely as a duty but as a strategic imperative for the future competitiveness and success of Vietnam.
A primary element of the strategy is the establishment of a modern, sustainable marine economy. Vietnam intends to develop green seaports, explore offshore renewable energy options, leverage marine biotechnology, foster eco-tourism, and manage sustainable fisheries. Additionally, authorities plan to bolster efforts against illegal fishing, safeguard marine ecosystems, and enhance the livelihoods of coastal populations.
The article also highlighted the necessity for restoring forests, wetlands, and other vital ecosystems while enhancing climate resilience in at-risk areas. Investments in environmental monitoring technologies, artificial intelligence applications, digital mapping, and climate forecasting are anticipated to be instrumental in bolstering environmental governance and disaster preparedness.
President To Lam concluded his address by urging collaborative action from governments, businesses, communities, and citizens alike. He encouraged every Vietnamese individual to engage actively through tangible initiatives such as tree planting, reducing single-use plastics, conserving energy, safeguarding water resources, and adopting sustainable practices to foster a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for the nation.
