Vietnam’s authorities are advancing a significant overhaul of their National Land Use Planning approach for the 2021-2030 timeframe, with a vision stretching to 2050. This initiative is designed to harmonize swift economic advancement with environmental preservation, food security, and sustainable urban growth.
Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung led a high-level meeting in Hanoi to examine the suggested revisions and engage in discussions regarding the enforcement of land management policies. Senior representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, along with various governmental sectors, participated in these talks.
Officials pointed out that Vietnam’s developmental priorities have shifted notably over the last five years, particularly in response to increasing needs for industrial zones, urban infrastructure, and economic development. Consequently, the country is calling for a more adaptable and future-oriented land use strategy.
During the meeting, ministries evaluated several critical land categories, including rice cultivation zones, protected forests, special-use forests, and land designated for national defense and security. Authorities emphasized that any planning modifications must prevent land waste while avoiding lengthy delays in developmental projects.
Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung highlighted that upcoming land planning must cater to both current economic necessities and long-term national objectives. He cautioned against disjointed development, asserting that land management should be integrated with broader national, regional, and sectoral strategies.
Additionally, officials underscored the necessity of safeguarding food security, particularly in protecting rice-growing regions such as the Mekong Delta. Simultaneously, discussions addressed expanding industrial opportunities, transportation infrastructure, urban growth, and public services in regions with lower agricultural productivity.
The revamped planning framework will also take into account climate change, urbanization, global market trends, innovative farming technologies, and environmental challenges. Authorities believe these components are vital for constructing a sustainable and resilient land management system moving forward.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment affirmed its commitment to continually refining the revised planning proposal to ensure alignment with the country's long-term economic vision while safeguarding environmental integrity and national security.
