The Philippine government is ramping up its efforts to capture Senator Ronald Dela Rosa after the justice department mandated law enforcement to act on an International Criminal Court warrant concerning alleged crimes against humanity during the Duterte administration's anti-drug campaign.
Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida has declared Dela Rosa a fugitive, warning that anyone aiding his evasion could face legal repercussions. Law enforcement agencies are currently engaged in a nationwide search for the senator.
Dela Rosa previously held the position of national police chief under former President Rodrigo Duterte and was pivotal in the controversial anti-drug initiative that spanned from 2016 to 2022, leading to thousands of fatalities and attracting severe criticism from human rights organizations and several Western nations.
The International Criminal Court has charged Dela Rosa with involvement in the deaths of at least 32 individuals from July 2016 to April 2018. Prosecutors claim these killings are part of a broader campaign, potentially qualifying as crimes against humanity.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested last year and is currently facing trial in The Hague. Furthermore, Philippine authorities revealed that investigations into other senior officials linked to the anti-drug operations are still underway.
Dela Rosa has previously attempted to thwart the ICC warrant via the Philippine Supreme Court, asserting that the nation had already exited from the international tribunal. However, the court dismissed his appeal, enabling law enforcement to proceed with the arrest.
The senator has reportedly been in hiding for several months, fearing detention. Recently, he made a brief appearance at the Philippine Senate before fleeing amidst confusion triggered by gunfire incidents nearby. Authorities are now probing whether the chaos was orchestrated to facilitate his escape.
This situation has heightened political rivalry between the Duterte family and the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Vice President Sara Duterte accused the government of politically targeting her family in light of her father's arrest and ongoing ICC hearings.
These developments have ignited extensive discussions across the Philippines regarding accountability, justice, and the evolving political landscape as authorities persist in their nationwide pursuit of the senator.
