Strengthening Innovation Ties: Vietnam and EU's Collaborative Future

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam is enhancing its collaborative efforts with the European Union in science, technology, and innovation, marking a significant stride following a recent high-level meeting in Hanoi. Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung engaged with European Union Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva on May 26 at the Government Headquarters.

Discussions centered around how to broaden their partnership in research, digital transformation, and sustainable development, with key figures from various Vietnamese ministries present.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung extended a warm welcome to the EU representatives, acknowledging the positive trajectory of Vietnam-EU relations over recent years. The partnership, the Deputy PM noted, has seen growth in areas including trade, investment, and education.

He emphasized the significance of the newly upgraded Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, formalized during the European Council President’s visit to Vietnam in January 2026. This revamped partnership framework promises enhanced cooperation in innovation and high technology.

Both parties expressed enthusiasm about preparations for a Letter of Intent to fortify their collaboration in science and innovation, deemed an important milestone for connecting Vietnam's research institutions and startups with substantial European innovation initiatives.

Ho Quoc Dung reiterated Vietnam's robust growth potential, fueled by its youthful workforce and dynamic digital economy, aiming for closer ties with the EU on fronts like AI, renewable energy, and sustainable development.

EU Commissioner Zaharieva commended Vietnam’s innovation potential and reaffirmed the EU's status as a leading global research and development hub, with plans to heighten investment and cooperation in science and innovation in the near future.

She detailed how the forthcoming cooperation agreement would facilitate greater involvement of Vietnamese entities in Horizon Europe, the EU's premier research and innovation program, while bolstering technology transfer through increased European investment in Vietnam.

Concluding the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung expressed gratitude for the EU's ongoing support and reiterated Vietnam's commitment to advancing cooperation in high-tech fields and digital transformation, with mutual confidence that enhanced innovation collaboration will yield long-lasting benefits for sustainable growth.
