New US Airstrikes in Iran Heighten Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Post by : Raina Nasser

On Thursday, the United States military executed new airstrikes in Iran, specifically targeting a military installation close to the vital Strait of Hormuz, as reported by a US official.

This operation was directed at neutralizing risks posed to US personnel and commercial vessels traversing the region. Sources indicate that the strike targeted an Iranian drone control facility situated in Bandar Abbas, where preparations for launching attack drones were allegedly underway.

The official added that US forces intercepted and destroyed four Iranian drones in the area. Just prior to the strike, the site was reportedly readying to dispatch a fifth drone.

Local media in Iran indicated that three explosions were detected in Bandar Abbas around 1:30 a.m. local time. Following the event, air defense mechanisms in the vicinity were activated for several minutes.

A US defense official characterized the strikes as “measured” and “exclusively defensive,” asserting that they were undertaken to uphold the ceasefire agreed upon earlier this year between the US and Iran.

This incident occurred shortly after former President Donald Trump disputed claims made by Iranian media about a draft deal to restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian state sources, the proposed agreement involved a collaborative effort between Iran and Oman to manage shipping traffic in the region, with expectations that the US would alleviate sanctions and lessen military activities near Iranian waters.

However, Trump refuted this information, insisting that no single nation would gain control over the Strait of Hormuz. He labeled the waterway as international waters during a cabinet session, and cautioned against any attempts to monopolize it.

There has been no immediate response from the White House or the Oman embassy in Washington regarding these developments.

Additional US military actions earlier in the week targeted missile sites and vessels in southern Iran accused of positioning naval mines, which defense officials described as precautionary measures.

In reaction, Iranian authorities maintained their stance, with Ebrahim Azizi, who heads Iran’s parliamentary national security committee, stating that US coercion and threats would not deter Iran from its objectives concerning uranium enrichment, sanctions alleviation, and control over the Strait of Hormuz.

This latest confrontation underscores the persistent tensions between the United States and Iran, despite ongoing dialogues aimed at conflict de-escalation in the region.
