Vietnam recently observed a heartfelt memorial and burial service in Nghe An province to honor 80 of its volunteer soldiers and experts whose remains have returned from Laos after many years. This poignant event underscored the nation's profound respect and gratitude for those who sacrificed everything during wartime missions in Laos.
The memorial was held at the Nghi Loc Martyrs’ Cemetery, gathering senior leaders, military officials, and local residents. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra led the tributes, lighting incense in remembrance of the fallen heroes dedicated to the nation's liberation and international solidarity.
This recovery effort is part of a sustained cooperation initiative between Vietnam and Laos, focused on locating and returning the remains of Vietnamese soldiers who supported the Lao revolution during years of conflict. It showcases the historical ties shared by these neighboring nations.
During the 2025-2026 dry season, the Nghe An Provincial Military Command's search and recovery team successfully retrieved all designated remains. Although the individual identities of the remains are not yet confirmed, officials celebrated the mission’s complete success.
Vietnamese authorities have lauded the bravery of the volunteer soldiers and experts who collaborated with the Lao people during challenging times of war. Their contributions have fortified the special relationship between Vietnam and Laos.
Thanks were also extended toward the Lao government and local communities for their sustained support in preserving graves and aiding search teams in rugged terrains. Over four decades, this cooperation has facilitated the recovery of thousands of remains.
Officials report that nearly 12,900 remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts have been recovered from Laos, with hundreds identified and returned home. These efforts continue to offer solace to families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones for decades.
The burial ceremony concluded with deep emotion as delegates, soldiers, and citizens paid their respects by placing flowers and incense at the graves. The return of these heroes during the historic month of May serves as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, patriotism, and the unbreakable bond between Vietnam and Laos.
