The United States and Ukraine are set to hold important talks in Berlin this weekend as efforts increase to explore a possible ceasefire in the nearly four-year-long war with Russia. The discussions come just days before a high-level summit in the German capital that will bring together European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
According to a German government official, Germany is hosting delegations from the United States and Ukraine for meetings focused on narrowing differences over a potential ceasefire plan. These talks are seen as a critical step ahead of Monday’s summit, where European leaders will publicly reaffirm their support for Ukraine while also addressing growing pressure to find a path toward peace.
A US official confirmed that President Donald Trump has sent his envoy Steve Witkoff, along with his son-in-law Jared Kushner, to Germany. Witkoff has been closely involved in earlier discussions with both Ukraine and Russia and has played a key role in shaping a US-backed peace proposal. His presence signals that Washington believes there may be enough progress to justify further talks.
The White House had earlier said Trump would only send an official if there was a realistic chance of movement. The decision to proceed with the Berlin meetings suggests the US sees an opening to bridge remaining gaps between Kyiv and its partners.
However, the talks are taking place against a backdrop of serious disagreements. Ukraine has been resisting parts of earlier US proposals that it believes favor Moscow. A draft plan revealed last month reportedly called on Ukraine to give up additional territory, drop its goal of joining NATO, and accept limits on its military strength. Kyiv has pushed back strongly, saying such terms would reward aggression and weaken its long-term security.
European countries, especially Britain, France, and Germany, have been working in recent weeks to adjust the US proposals. Their aim has been to make the plan more acceptable to Ukraine while still keeping diplomatic channels open. These efforts highlight Europe’s growing role in shaping any future settlement.
On Monday, German opposition leader Friedrich Merz is set to host President Zelenskiy along with several European leaders in Berlin. The summit is expected to show unity with Ukraine at a time when the country faces both continued fighting on the battlefield and difficult diplomatic pressure off it.
The Berlin meetings reflect the urgency felt by all sides. The war has caused massive destruction, displaced millions, and strained global politics and economies. While a ceasefire remains uncertain, the talks show that diplomatic efforts are intensifying.
As Ukraine and its allies weigh the costs of continued conflict against the risks of compromise, the coming days in Berlin could prove crucial. Whether these discussions lead to a breakthrough or highlight deeper divisions, they will shape the next phase of international efforts to end the war.
