US Conducts New Airstrikes on ISIS in Syria Following Fatal Ambush

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant military response, the United States has executed a new wave of airstrikes targeting the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. This escalation follows last month’s tragic ambush in Palmyra, which resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter.

The operation, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), commenced at approximately 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, aiming at multiple IS positions throughout Syria. Although the exact list of allied nations involved in the operation was not disclosed, the Jordanian military affirmed its participation.

This military action is part of a broader initiative labeled Operation Hawkeye Strike, ordered by President Donald Trump in the wake of the Palmyra attack that claimed the lives of Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat.

CENTCOM issued a resolute statement: “Our message remains robust: if you harm our warfighters, we will track you down and eliminate you globally, regardless of your evasion tactics.”

Just prior to the strikes, Syrian authorities announced the capture of the military chief responsible for IS operations in the Levant, marking a decisive move in the ongoing campaign against the extremist organization.

On December 19, the Trump administration initiated a large-scale operation characterized by a significant airstrike campaign that targeted around 70 IS sites across central Syria, with the focus on dismantling IS logistics, infrastructure, and arms depots.

Historically, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have served as the main U.S. ally in combating IS. However, following the ousting of former President Bashar Assad in December 2024, American military efforts have increasingly aligned with the Syrian government in Damascus.

Moreover, Syria’s recent inclusion into the global coalition against the Islamic State showcases a broader regional effort to counter the extremist threat.

Despite losing substantial territory in recent years, IS remains a formidable threat, conducting lethal attacks and prompting continual U.S. and allied military operations to hinder its resurgence.
