The United States has praised Pakistan for its ongoing achievements in controlling terrorist groups that threaten peace and stability in the region and across the globe. This recognition came after the latest round of the Pakistan-US Counter-Terrorism Dialogue, which took place in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Joint Statement Highlights

A joint statement released by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry and the US authorities described Washington’s appreciation for Pakistan’s continued successes in containing dangerous entities that pose a risk to the safety of the region and the wider world.

The United States also expressed its deepest condolences for the lives lost in terrorist incidents across Pakistan. Among the tragedies mentioned were the barbaric Jaffar Express terrorist attack and the school bus bombing in Khuzdar. Both incidents caused civilian deaths and took the lives of brave law enforcement personnel.

According to the statement, the United States acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. It stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the two countries to strengthen security and stability.

BLA and Majeed Brigade Declared Terrorist Groups

The joint statement followed a major US announcement made just a day earlier. On Monday, Washington officially designated the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and its alias, the Majeed Brigade as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation.

The BLA, a separatist group, has been involved in a decades-long insurgency against the Pakistani state. The group seeks independence for Balochistan a province in southwest Pakistan rich in natural resources such as gas, coal, and minerals. This conflict has seen numerous violent attacks over the years.

The BLA has already been recognised as a terrorist group by both the United States and Pakistan in the past. In 2019, the US added it to the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT) after several high-profile attacks. The Majeed Brigade, believed to be a suicide attack unit linked to the BLA, has been responsible for some of the most deadly operations in recent years.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained the decision, saying, Since 2019, BLA has claimed responsibility for additional attacks, including by the Majeed Brigade. This, he said, made it necessary to tighten measures against the group’s activities.

Pakistan’s Military Engagements with the US

Just before the announcement, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir paid a visit to Washington. This was his second trip to the US since the brief but intense four-day conflict with India earlier this year.

During his visit, General Munir met with senior American political figures, top military officials, and members of the Pakistani diaspora living in the US. Discussions reportedly focused on security cooperationregional stability, and shared efforts to counter terrorism.

Details on the Jaffar Express Attack

One of the incidents mentioned in the joint statement was the Jaffar Express terrorist attack. The train, which travels between Balochistan and Punjab, was targeted in a deadly act of violence that claimed multiple lives and injured many others. The attack caused shock and outrage across Pakistan, and authorities pledged to bring those responsible to justice.

While no group officially claimed responsibility, security agencies believe the attack may have been linked to separatist or extremist elements operating in the region.

Khuzdar School Bus Bombing

Another tragedy that drew strong condemnation was the bombing of a school bus in Khuzdar. Balochistan. The attack targeted children and teachers, resulting in a heartbreaking loss of young lives. The cruelty of the assault prompted both national and international outrage.

The United States, in its statement, called the attack barbaric and expressed sympathy for the grieving families. Pakistani officials vowed to strengthen security for educational institutions, especially in areas affected by insurgent activities.

Long-Standing Pakistan-US Cooperation on Security

The Pakistan-US Counter-Terrorism Dialogue is a platform where the two countries share intelligence, plan joint strategies, and assess progress in fighting extremist threats.

Over the past two decades, Pakistan and the US have worked together against various terrorist networks, including Al-Qaeda Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and regional insurgent groups. Although there have been disagreements at times, cooperation in counter-terrorism has remained a key part of their relationship.

The US recognition of Pakistan’s recent achievements shows that the efforts of Pakistan’s military, police, and intelligence services are being noticed at the highest levels.

Balochistan – A Region of Opportunity and Unrest

The BLA’s activities have been concentrated in Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by area but one of the least developed. The province has huge reserves of gas, minerals, and other natural resources, as well as key trade routes such as the Gwadar Port. which is a central part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The insurgency has hindered development projects and caused repeated clashes between security forces and militants. The Pakistani government maintains that separatist movements are backed by foreign elements, though these claims are often denied by the groups involved.

Why the US Terror Listing Matters

Designating the BLA and Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organisations has significant implications. It means:

1. Freezing of Assets– Any financial assets linked to the groups within the US jurisdiction will be frozen.

2. Travel Restrictions– Members of the groups will be barred from entering the United States.

3. Criminal Penalties– Providing material support or resources to these groups becomes a serious criminal offence under US law.

This move is expected to increase international pressure on the BLA and limit its ability to raise funds or coordinate operations globally.

Moving Forward

While Pakistan welcomed the US recognition of its efforts, officials stressed that the fight against terrorism is far from over. Terrorist networks often adapt and reorganise, making it necessary for security forces to stay alert.

The joint statement from Islamabad and Washington concluded with a pledge to strengthen bilateral cooperation, share intelligence, and act jointly against any group threatening peace in the region.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said that this collaboration is vital not only for the security of both nations but also for the stability of South Asia and beyond.

The US praise for Pakistan’s counter-terrorism work comes at a time when the country faces multiple security challenges. The recognition serves as encouragement for Pakistan’s armed forces, police, and intelligence agencies, which have lost many lives in the fight against terrorism.

The fresh US terror listing of the BLA and Majeed Brigade is a strong signal of zero tolerance towards violent separatist movements. With both countries vowing to continue their cooperation, the hope is that such joint efforts will lead to a more secure and peaceful future for the region.
