US Military Engages Two Abandoned Iranian Oil Tankers Amid Rising Tensions

Post by : Shweta

In a strategic move amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the United States military announced strikes on two Iranian-flagged oil tankers near the Gulf of Oman. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), these vessels aimed to breach a naval blockade related to the ongoing conflict with Iran and regional security measures. Both ships were deemed disabled before they could reach Iranian shores.

CENTCOM highlighted that the tankers were intercepted on Friday after U.S. forces noted their approach towards Iranian territory, defying blockade limitations. Notably, the vessels were “unladen,” indicating they did not carry any oil or cargo during the strikes. Earlier in the week, another Iranian-flagged tanker faced similar action, marking an assertive approach by American forces.

Reports confirm that a U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet, deployed from the USS George H.W. Bush, played a pivotal role in this operation. The fighter jet executed precision strikes on the smokestacks of the identified tankers, the Sea Star III and Sevda. CENTCOM later affirmed that all aforementioned vessels are “no longer transiting towards Iran.”

This latest action is a continuation of a broader U.S. initiative enforcing a maritime blockade that commenced in April 2026, instituted by the Trump administration to address escalating regional tensions linked to Iranian military actions in pivotal waterways. The U.S. maintains that the operation's aim is to restrict Iranian oil shipments and safeguard commercial maritime routes.

In response, Iran vehemently criticized the strikes, accusing the U.S. of breaching a current ceasefire agreement. Iranian officials labeled the strikes as perilous, warning that ongoing military pressure might heighten destabilization in the region. Tehran asserts that the U.S.'s recent maneuvers jeopardize diplomatic efforts aimed at alleviating tensions.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a crucial corridor for global shipping, with a significant portion of the world's oil exports traversing this route daily. The ongoing crisis has rendered oil markets particularly reactive to military activities in the vicinity. Following the tanker strikes, global oil prices saw an uptick due to concerns over potential escalation between the U.S. and Iran.

Since the implementation of the blockade, CENTCOM reported that around 70 commercial vessels have either been redirected or prevented from entering Iranian ports. U.S. military officials reiterated that operations to enforce the blockade continue in the Gulf, supported by naval vessels, surveillance aircraft, and allied maritime forces. The U.S. government has consistently affirmed its commitment to safeguarding international shipping lanes while urging Iran to engage in more extensive security and diplomatic negotiations.

Even amid this military confrontation, diplomatic dialogues between Washington and Tehran persist through international intermediaries. President Trump recently affirmed that a fragile ceasefire with Iran technically continues to exist, despite mutual accusations of breaches. Analysts caution that further military incidents in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact global energy supplies and exacerbate geopolitical tensions throughout the Middle East.
