In a developing story, the United States has emphasized that Iran is required to negotiate a robust agreement or else face “alternative means” to address ongoing conflicts, as talks regarding nuclear concerns and regional stability unfold.
At a press briefing in New Delhi, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed a commitment to diplomacy, indicating that discussions are ongoing regarding a potential framework for Iran's nuclear activities alongside the pivotal issue of the Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio mentioned a “substantial proposal” currently under consideration that could pave the way for Iran's reopening of the Strait, initiating a serious, time-limited negotiation concerning its nuclear agenda. He conveyed optimism about reaching a conclusive agreement.
President Donald Trump previously advised caution in the negotiations, stating in a Truth Social post that the US's blockade concerning Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz would persist until a formal, certified agreement is reached.
Although Iran has yet to provide an official response, the Iranian-linked Tasnim news agency has reported significant rifts in negotiations, notably regarding Tehran's insistence on unfreezing Iranian assets held abroad.
In response to the rising prospects of a peace accord, global oil prices fell nearly 6 percent on Monday. Earlier, Trump announced that the US and Iran had “largely negotiated” a memorandum that could facilitate reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Prior to the current escalations, the Strait of Hormuz was responsible for transporting about 20 percent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, underscoring its significance for international energy supply chains.
Despite ongoing discussions, numerous critical issues remain outstanding, including Iran’s nuclear enrichment process, sanctions relief, unfrozen Iranian oil funds, and the regional dynamics involving Israel and Hezbollah.
A senior US official indicated that Iran has provisionally agreed to the reopening of the Strait in return for lifting the naval blockade, suggesting Iran might also be amenable to reducing its highly enriched uranium reserves.
The official further remarked that Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has purportedly endorsed the broad parameters of a proposed agreement, although Iranian officials have yet to authenticate this statement.
The pathway forward is expected to prioritize the reopening of the strait and the cessation of the blockade, while technical discussions concerning nuclear frameworks will progress at a later stage. Another senior US figure noted that negotiators would have a 60-day window to finalize a detailed accord.
Iran has consistently dismissed American and Israeli claims concerning its nuclear ambitions, asserting that its uranium enrichment endeavors are strictly for peaceful, civilian applications.
The ongoing tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran have significantly impacted global energy prices and have heightened worries regarding the cost of fuel, food, and fertilizer worldwide. A tenuous ceasefire has endured since early April, though regional tensions remain elevated.
