Deepti Sharma's Surprise Release by UP Warriorz Shakes Cricket Fans

Post by : Mina Rahman

In a surprising turn of events that has left cricket enthusiasts in disbelief, the UP Warriorz franchise of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has officially released India’s star all-rounder Deepti Sharma ahead of the 2025 auction. This decision comes on the heels of Deepti's stellar performance in the recently concluded ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, where she not only played a crucial role in India's ascent to the top but was also recognized as the Player of the Series.

World Cup Triumph and Individual Glory

Deepti Sharma showcased exceptional talent throughout the World Cup, establishing herself as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. The 28-year-old all-rounder’s prowess in spin bowling, coupled with her vital middle-order batting, played a significant role in India's success. Her crowning moment came in the final against South Africa, where she took 5 wickets for just 39 runs and contributed 58 runs with the bat, propelling India to victory.

Her consistent performance during the tournament further solidified her reputation as one of the premier cricketers in women’s cricket.

Management's Controversial Move

The surprise announcement to release Deepti came as part of the franchise's strategic overhaul. The UP Warriorz disclosed their list of retained and released players, and Deepti's exclusion quickly became the center of attention among the cricketing community.

Head coach Abhishek Nayar shed light on the franchise's motives, stating the necessity for a strategic reset. “Decisions regarding retentions are challenging, especially given the talent present in the squad,” said Nayar. “Our goal is to start afresh, harnessing financial flexibility to pursue players who align with our championship aspirations, including potentially re-signing some in the auction.”

Legacy and Future Prospects

This is not Deepti's first significant impact in franchise cricket. In the 2024 WPL season, she was awarded Player of the Tournament, leading UP Warriorz with her exceptional skills. Her calm demeanour and solid leadership made her a pillar of the team.

Nonetheless, the franchise's new direction signals a commitment to younger talents, with Shweta Sehrawat being the only retained player from the previous season.

Nayar conveyed the difficulty behind such decisions, stating, “Decisions like these are never easy. Our foundation lies in our process—right or wrong, we’ll persist with it. Our aim is to create the optimal team configuration with ample financial resources.”

Deepti Sharma’s exit creates a compelling narrative leading up to the upcoming WPL 2025 auction, positioning her as one of the most sought-after players. Her versatility as a top-tier all-rounder, complemented by her extraordinary tournament performances, is sure to attract attention from various franchises.

Analysts assert that Deepti's blend of skills makes her a valuable asset to any side, and regardless of her next destination, her involvement promises to enhance any team she joins.

This decision underscores the evolving dynamics of financial planning within women’s cricket franchises, reflecting a landscape where star players like Deepti Sharma can face tough decisions despite their on-field success.

As the weeks ahead unfold, all eyes will be on Deepti, a cricketing icon poised to continue her inspiring journey.
