The United States and Iran are preparing to hold fresh talks in Oman in an effort to reduce rising tensions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme. A regional official said the meeting is expected to take place on Friday and is aimed at lowering the risk of conflict in the Middle East.
Relations between Washington and Tehran have remained tense for months. The situation became more serious after Iran’s tough response to protests inside the country and several recent military incidents at sea and in the air. The growing presence of United States military forces near Iran has also raised fears of a possible confrontation.
Iran requested that the talks be moved from Turkey to Oman. Officials said Iran sees Oman as neutral ground, as earlier nuclear discussions were held there. Iran has made it clear that it only wants to discuss its nuclear activities and does not want other issues added to the talks.
Iranian leaders have repeatedly said their ballistic missile programme is not open for discussion. They argue that the missiles are needed for defence and protecting national security. Iran has also warned that it will respond forcefully if it feels threatened.
The United States has a different view. American officials have said they want wider discussions that include Iran’s missile programme and its role in the region. These differences have slowed progress and made negotiations difficult.
President Donald Trump has warned that serious consequences could follow if no agreement is reached. He has said talks are ongoing but has not shared many details. Reports suggest senior officials from both countries are expected to attend the Oman meeting.
Recent events have increased urgency. Oil prices rose after the United States shot down an Iranian drone and after Iranian boats approached a tanker linked to the United States in the Strait of Hormuz. These incidents have raised concerns that tensions could spiral out of control.
Iran says it has stopped enriching uranium since United States strikes on its nuclear facilities last year and insists its nuclear programme is peaceful. Still, years of sanctions, threats, and failed talks have left deep mistrust on both sides.
The main goal of the Oman meeting is to cool tensions and avoid violence. Even small progress could help prevent a larger crisis. While major disagreements remain, both countries appear to believe that talks are better than conflict.
