Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will visit Ireland on Tuesday for the first time since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022. The Irish government confirmed the visit in a statement on Monday, calling it an important moment for both countries as Europe pushes for stronger support for peace and stability.
During his visit, Zelenskiy is expected to meet Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin. The two leaders will discuss Ireland’s role in supporting Ukraine, both politically and economically. Zelenskiy will also take part in the inauguration of the Ireland-Ukraine Economic Forum, an event that will also include Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris. The forum aims to strengthen trade, investment, and development ties between the two nations, especially as Ukraine continues to rebuild its economy while fighting continues at home.
The Ukrainian leader will also meet Ireland’s newly-elected president, Catherine Connolly. This meeting is seen as a symbolic step, showing Ireland’s continued support for Ukraine in the face of growing challenges.
Zelenskiy’s trip to Ireland comes at a very tense time. Ukraine is facing one of its hardest political and military phases since Russia launched its full-scale invasion nearly three years ago. International support remains vital, and European leaders are looking for ways to strengthen diplomatic efforts.
Before arriving in Ireland, Zelenskiy will stop in Paris to meet French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders are expected to discuss what they call “the conditions of a just and durable peace.” Their meeting follows earlier talks in Geneva and discussions around an American peace proposal. These talks underline the urgency of finding a solution that ensures Ukraine’s security and respects its sovereignty.
Zelenskiy’s visit to Ireland will add another layer to Europe’s diplomatic push. For many, the trip shows that Ukraine continues to seek allies, economic partnerships, and political backing as it works toward a long-lasting peace.
As Ireland prepares to welcome the Ukrainian president, the visit is being viewed as both historic and strategic—a chance for Ireland to deepen its support and for Ukraine to strengthen its network of international partners during a critical time in its struggle for peace.
