First Gaza Children Evacuated to UK for Treatment

Children Evacuated for Medical Help

A group of critically ill and injured Palestinian children have left Gaza and are on their way to the United Kingdom. These children will receive urgent treatment under the NHS. This marks the first time the UK government has directly brought children from Gaza for medical care during the ongoing war.

The operation is being managed by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Home Office, and the Department of Health. Officials confirmed the news and said the children are expected to arrive in the UK in the coming days.

Foreign Secretary’s Confirmation

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed that the evacuation had taken place. She explained that it took significant diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the children from Gaza. Cooper stated that the UK is committed to helping injured families and also ensuring Palestinian students with places at British universities can continue their studies.

Although the exact number of children was not disclosed, sources suggest the group includes between 30 and 50 children. Where necessary, each child may be accompanied by a family member.

Previous Private Efforts

Before this government-led scheme, some children from Gaza had been brought to the UK for medical treatment through private initiatives such as Project Pure Hope. However, this is the first official UK government effort to directly evacuate sick children from the conflict zone.

Ongoing Conflict in Gaza

The evacuation comes as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen. According to the local health ministry, dozens of people are being killed daily by Israeli military operations. On Saturday alone, the bodies of 47 people arrived at Gaza hospitals.

The situation has been worsened by food shortages. Since August, UN-backed experts have confirmed famine in Gaza City. Reports say more than 140 people have died due to starvation and malnutrition.

Healthcare System in Collapse

Earlier this year, the World Health Organization warned that Gaza’s health system had been pushed “beyond breaking point” by the conflict. Hospitals are struggling to cope with the high number of casualties and lack of resources.

Israel has said it is working to improve aid delivery but has challenged the health ministry’s reports on deaths from malnutrition.

Background to the War

The current conflict began after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which killed around 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken. In response, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza.

Since then, at least 64,803 people have been killed in Israeli strikes, according to Gaza’s health ministry. International organizations continue to warn about the humanitarian impact of the ongoing war.

Hope for Families

For the families of the children who have been evacuated, the journey to the UK brings hope amid despair. Access to advanced medical treatment offers them a chance of survival and recovery, something that was impossible in Gaza under the current conditions.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the UK is determined to play its part. She emphasized that this is not only about treating the children but also about supporting students and families affected by the conflict.
