At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed directly appealed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bring an end to the Gaza war. The rare and pointed message from the UAE highlights growing diplomatic pressure on Israel from within the Arab world.
The meeting gained attention as it showcased the UAE’s readiness to confront Israel over its wartime policies. Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution, reiterating Abu Dhabi’s support for a two-state solution that respects both Israeli and Palestinian aspirations.
The UAE normalized ties with Israel in 2020 through the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords, opening doors for economic and security cooperation. However, Israel’s continued military campaigns in Gaza and plans to annex parts of the West Bank have tested this relationship. UAE officials have repeatedly warned that such moves could undermine the accords and harm diplomatic progress.
Netanyahu has long opposed the creation of a Palestinian state. During his UN address, he criticized Western nations for recognizing Palestinian statehood, claiming it undermines negotiations. His refusal to shift position has raised tensions with Arab partners who view his policies as destabilizing.
Recent recognition of a Palestinian state by countries such as France, Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal has further escalated the debate. Israel reacted strongly against these decisions, while the UAE’s diplomatic intervention signals a growing divide between Israel and its regional partners.
The UAE faces a delicate balancing act: maintaining its strategic relationship with Israel while addressing public sentiment across the Arab world that overwhelmingly supports Palestinian rights. Sheikh Abdullah’s direct appeal to Netanyahu shows that humanitarian and political concerns are being placed at the forefront of diplomatic discussions.
The UAE’s move could mark a turning point in how Arab states deal with Israel. Instead of silent cooperation, Arab partners may increasingly demand accountability on issues related to Gaza and Palestinian statehood. Whether this will push Netanyahu toward a policy shift remains uncertain, but the pressure is mounting.
