UAE and OCHA Leaders Address Critical Humanitarian Needs in Sudan

Post by : Mara Rahim

Reem Al Hashimy, the UAE's Minister of State for International Cooperation, engaged in talks with Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The meeting, held in Geneva, Switzerland, centered on the escalating humanitarian situation in Sudan and the necessary measures to alleviate suffering and establish stability.

Throughout their discussion, they underscored the significance of ongoing US mediation, noting the crucial role it plays alongside the Quad countries in advocating for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Sudan. The ongoing conflict has inflicted tremendous hardship on the civilian population, with both parties emphasizing the need to halt hostilities to foster substantial progress.

Both Al Hashimy and Fletcher voiced grave concerns regarding the increasing humanitarian exigencies throughout Sudan. With millions displaced and families struggling for essentials like food, clean water, medical care, and safe housing, the need for quick and unimpeded humanitarian aid is more urgent than ever.

A significant portion of their discussions revolved around ensuring safe, swift, and unrestricted humanitarian access across Sudan. They reinforced the necessity for aid organizations to operate freely to deliver critical assistance to communities trapped in conflict. The safeguarding of aid workers’ mobility was deemed essential to avert further loss of life.

The protection of civilians was identified as a paramount concern for global stakeholders. Al Hashimy and Fletcher highlighted the urgent requirement to shield individuals from violence, reiterating the obligation of all parties in the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law, safeguarding civilians, hospitals, schools, and vital services.

Accountability also emerged as a pivotal discussion point. The leaders acknowledged the necessity of holding those accountable for severe crimes and abuses, emphasizing that delivering justice for victims is vital for healing and fostering enduring peace and stability in Sudan.

The dialogue also revealed an urgent need for augmented funding, as humanitarian organizations in Sudan face significant financial hurdles, hindering their ability to meet the soaring demand for food, medicine, and shelter. Al Hashimy and Fletcher concurred on the imperative for the international community to bolster support to facilitate principled humanitarian assistance.

Reflecting on the UAE's longstanding commitment to peace and humanitarian initiatives in Sudan, Al Hashimy reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to alleviating suffering while collaborating with international partners to forge a peaceful future for the Sudanese populace.

Tom Fletcher acknowledged the UAE’s proactive role, emphasizing that cooperative efforts among global partners are crucial to addressing a crisis of this magnitude. He asserted that cohesive international actions can lead to reduced violence, enhanced access, and relief for millions in dire need.

Concluding the meeting, both leaders reiterated their call for amplified global solidarity and expedited action. They expressed optimism that persistent diplomatic endeavors, coupled with extended humanitarian support, would bring much-needed relief to Sudan and guide the country towards peace and stability.
