UAE Unveils $1 Billion AI Initiative to Foster Growth Across Africa

Post by : Raina Nasser

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially launched its "AI for Development" initiative, committing $1 billion to bolster artificial intelligence projects across African nations. This significant announcement was made during the G20 summit by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

The initiative seeks to drive economic and social advancement in Africa by upgrading digital infrastructure, improving government services, and boosting productivity. It emphasizes the integration of artificial intelligence in vital sectors such as education, agriculture, and infrastructure, thus creating innovative solutions that accelerate growth and facilitate sustainable development.

Overseen by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, this project closely collaborates with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency to align with long-term development objectives. This partnership underscores the UAE’s dedication to assisting developing nations in capitalizing on advanced technologies and leveraging AI for constructive transformations.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, remarked that this initiative illustrates the UAE's conviction that artificial intelligence can serve as a tool for equitable growth and sustainable progression. He stated that by merging technology, funding, and strategic partnerships, the UAE aims to assist African nations in overcoming obstacles and establishing robust economies.

Integrating AI into sectors such as education, agriculture, and infrastructure opens avenues for inclusive development. Furthermore, this initiative allows UAE enterprises to engage in significant projects that forge stronger economic and technological alliances with African countries while supporting global efforts toward sustainable development goals.

This initiative aligns with the humanitarian vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding father. It reflects the continued commitment of the nation’s leaders, including President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, highlighted the UAE's pivotal role in assisting global communities. He indicated that the UAE is steadfast in implementing critical projects utilizing AI for development, especially in Africa. Dr. Al Ameri elaborated that this initiative is a part of the UAE's continuous efforts to enhance living conditions and forge a brighter future for populations facing developmental hurdles.

Numerous African nations require initiatives like this to enhance education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The UAE is emerging as a worldwide leader in artificial intelligence and technology, achieving notable ranks in international digital development metrics.

Since 1971, the UAE has provided over AED 152 billion in aid to African countries. This new AI for Development initiative builds on that longstanding history, aspiring to foster more AI-driven projects throughout the continent, thereby reinforcing the UAE’s status as a hub for innovative technologies and intelligent systems, propelling development, modernization, and inclusive growth globally.

This remarkable initiative exemplifies the UAE’s resolve to lead in technology and global development, delivering intelligent solutions that promote sustainable progress in Africa and beyond.
