Abu Dhabi Festival Highlights Emirati Arts in the USA

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

This November, the Abu Dhabi Festival Abroad enchanted audiences across the United States, bringing forth Emirati artistry to esteemed cultural institutions. Sponsored by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the festival's cultural diplomacy effort featured concerts and dialogues bridging the music of the Middle East and the West.

Noteworthy moments included the American debut of Shams Wujoudi in New York, a work by Faraj Abyad that blends Syrian folklore with Western orchestral elements, highlighted at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre along with visual art from the Barjeel Art Foundation and the newly established Athar Orchestra.

Carnegie Hall hosted the premiere of the opera A Journey to the New World, performed by the Reina Sofía School of Music Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The concert featured compositions by Albéniz, Barber, and Dvořák, with contributions from Emirati cellist Elham Al Marzooqi, violinist Renaud Capuçon, and musicians from the Colombian Youth Philharmonic.

Beyond the performances, the festival also enabled discussions on the significance of cultural exchange. The Arts in Embassies talks on November 14 in New York and November 18 in Washington, D.C., saw artists like Al Marzooqi, Abyad, Kinan Azmeh, and Kate Seely come together, exploring music's role in fostering understanding across cultures and inspiring creative collaborations.

By showcasing Emirati talent on an international scale, the Abu Dhabi Festival strengthens cultural ties and offers a resonant glimpse into the UAE’s expanding impact on the global arts landscape.
